What is the REFLEX Method?

Spoken language consists of a sequence of sounds linked together into a perceptual pattern used to express thoughts. Each independent or individual sound unit is the smallest unit of spoken language. These individual units are linked together to form words, phrases, and then into a clause, a sentence, and so on.

Sound becomes language when people keep, repeat, repeat for the same purpose and share in communication. Every child goes through this process in different circumstances. The sounds “Duh” and “Goo” are the automatic representations of sounds in response to stimuli from the child’s environment. Babies learn to imitate the sounds made by their caregivers. The sounds that are learned and recognized are the language the baby learns to communicate. Gradually, the baby learns to automatically associate certain sounds with things and events. Thus the use of sounds to convey thoughts about things and events becomes an automatic reflex for the child.

Just as a child learns language skills by listening, writing and reading, it is easier for a student to learn to use a foreign language more fully if all four language skills are applied. Learners will be introduced first to the sound of the word, then to the picture of the thing or event that the word represents, and then learn to recognize the word while reading and use the word when writing. The best method of teaching a foreign language should be one that can use four skills almost simultaneously to teach students. Creating a kind of automatic reflex while using new language skills is as natural as a baby learning to speak from its environment.
